SUVs and crossovers have seen an unrivalled surge in popularity over recent years as motorists flock to own these machines. Typically, smaller models of manufacturers halo models, crossovers deliver all the prestige of their larger counterparts whilst, potentially, being more usable day-to-day.

With so many variants on the market, which do you go for?

Every manufacturer currently is likely to have a model that fits into the SUV or Crossover market segment. This was an area of the market that until recently, had very few competitors and typically, wasn’t the car of choice as estates and larger saloon vehicles held strong. However, as the new millennium dawned, manufacturers started a sea change and redefined what the SUV could be.

This kick-started a trend which would only gain more and more momentum. Whilst this revolution started with the more premium brands, with the likes of BMW and Porsche leading the way, it was the arrival of the likes of Nissan's Qashqai in 2006 that really upped the bar of this segment and bought these types of vehicles to a brand new audience.

Since then SUVs and Crossovers are now a common sight on our roads. With so much choice, what are some of the leading crossovers that you can buy currently? Let's take a look at three below.

Nissan Qashqai:

Produced by Japanese manufacturer Nissan, the Qashqai has been on the scene since 2006 and in that time has seen a number of facelifts. A practical and usable machine on a day-to-day basis, the Qashqai features a range of capable powertrains and configurations which make this a confident machine at an affordable price point. It comes as no surprise then that it’s proved to be so popular since launch.

Kia Sportage:

The Kia Sportage has been around for several decades but it wasn’t until the third and fourth generations of the model until things really took off for the South Korean brand. Capitalising on the growth in popularity of crossovers, Kia joined the party with a heavily revised and updated Sportage. A modern looking design, packed with a raft of options as standard, the Kia Sportage is a reliable and formidable contender to the crossover elite.

Volvo XC60:

Volvo is a brand renowned for both its reliability and safety. In more recent years it’s forged its own path in the style stakes too with it’s latest XC model range pitting the brand directly against the likes of BMW and Audi. Arguably one of the highlights in that range is the Volvo XC60. Swedish simplicity teamed with that world-renowned reliability, safety and handsome looks makes this a worthy contender and genuine alternative to the likes of the BMW X3. If you’re looking for something a little different to that of the German mainstream, perhaps the XC60 is your answer.
